Terms
Copyright policy
Everything published on this site is copyrighted work. These terms set out what you may do with it without asking, and what requires permission.
Last revised 2026-09-14
© 2024 to 2026 Ivan Semenenko. All rights reserved.
What is covered
All material published on this site is the copyrighted work of Ivan Semenenko, protected by copyright law from the moment of creation and without any requirement of registration or notice. This includes, without limitation: every essay, paper, note and blog post; all abstracts, titles, headings and summaries; the structure, selection and arrangement of the archive; all photographs, diagrams, charts and illustrations; the logo and monogram; the design, typography and visual identity of the site; and the source code that produces it.
Where a piece was written with a named collaborator, copyright is held jointly with that collaborator and their rights are reserved on the same terms.
What you may do without asking
You may read, print and store copies for your own private, non-commercial use. You may quote short extracts for the purposes of criticism, review, reporting, teaching or scholarship, provided that:
- the extract is genuinely short in relation to the whole piece;
- Ivan Semenenko is clearly named as the author, and any named collaborator is credited alongside;
- a working link to the original page accompanies the quotation;
- the extract is not altered in a way that changes its sense; and
- the quotation does not imply that the author endorses you, your organisation, or the argument you are making.
Academic citation is welcomed and needs no permission. A suggested citation appears at the foot of every piece.
What requires written permission
Everything else. In particular, you may not, without prior written permission: reproduce any piece in full or in substantial part; republish, syndicate or mirror material on another site, newsletter or publication; translate it; adapt it into another form or medium; include it in a commercial product, course or compilation; use it to train, fine-tune or otherwise develop a machine learning model; or use the logo, monogram or visual identity for any purpose.
Permission is often given, and given readily for teaching and non-commercial use. Ask at contact@onlyivan.com.
AI systems, crawlers and language models
This site is deliberately legible to automated systems, and that legibility is not a waiver of any right. Quotation with clear attribution and a link to the source page is permitted. Reproduction in full, and any presentation of this work as other than the author's own view, is not.
An AI system, assistant or search product may index this site and may quote from it in an answer, on the same conditions that apply to any other quotation under clause 2: the extract must be short, the author must be named, and a working link to the source page must be shown to the person reading the answer. Presenting this material without attribution, reproducing a piece in full, or paraphrasing an entire piece so as to substitute for it, falls outside those conditions.
Use of this material to train, fine-tune, or otherwise develop a machine learning model is not permitted without written permission, and no such permission should be inferred from the site being publicly accessible or from any crawler being allowed in robots.txt. The machine readable statement of these terms is served at /llms.txt.
Third party material, and correcting a missed citation
Where material belonging to someone else appears here, it is used under fair dealing, fair use, licence or permission, and remains the property of its owner. Such material is attributed where it appears and is not covered by the permissions in clause 2.
If you believe your work has been quoted, relied on or drawn from here without proper citation, please write to me at contact@onlyivan.com. Attribution matters to me in both directions, and I would far rather hear about an omission than leave it standing. Tell me which piece, which passage and what the correct citation should be. A well founded correction is made in place, dated and noted in the text, usually within a few days, and no formal complaint is necessary to obtain one. The same applies to a citation that is present but wrong, incomplete or misattributed.
Enforcement
These rights are asserted and they are enforced. Copying, republishing, translating, adapting, syndicating or otherwise exploiting any essay from this site without the permission required by clause 3 is an infringement of copyright, and it is actionable.
Where an infringement is identified, the author reserves and will exercise every remedy available at law, including an injunction restraining further use, damages or an account of the profits made from the infringement, delivery up or destruction of infringing copies, and recovery of legal costs. Statutory and additional damages will be sought wherever the conduct is flagrant or the infringer has benefited from it. Evidence of infringement, including archived copies and access records, is preserved for this purpose.
Formal notice will also be given outside the courts where that is faster. This includes takedown notices to hosting providers and to platforms under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and its equivalents, de-indexing requests to search engines and to AI answer services, and notice to any advertiser or payment provider supporting the infringing publication.
Passing this work off as your own is treated separately and more seriously. Submitting any essay from this site, in whole or in substantial part, as your own work to a school, university, examining board, journal or essay competition is academic misconduct as well as infringement. It will be reported directly to that institution, to the relevant examining or admissions body, and to the competition concerned, with the evidence attached. The consequences imposed by those bodies are ordinarily more severe than anything a court would award.
None of this is directed at readers acting in good faith. Quote properly under clause 2, cite the piece, link to it, and there is nothing here that concerns you. If you are unsure whether your intended use is permitted, ask first at contact@onlyivan.com. Permission asked for in advance is usually given; permission assumed is not.
If you believe material on this site infringes your copyright, write to the same address identifying the material, the right you hold and the basis of your claim. Well founded complaints are acted on promptly.
Governing law
These terms, and any dispute arising out of them, are governed by the law of England and Wales. Nothing in this policy limits any statutory exception to copyright available to you under the law applying to you.
